Yays and Nays around Acting Headshot Makeup

Do You Really Need a Makeup Artist for Your Headshots?

One of the most common questions I get before a headshot session is: “Do I really need to hire a makeup artist?”

The short answer: yes, in most cases. About 85% of the images you see in my portfolio were created with the help of a professional makeup artist (MUA). Lighting and camera work are crucial, but the extra polish you see in my galleries often comes from the subtle artistry of a trained MUA.

While it’s standard in larger markets like L.A. or New York to automatically include a makeup artist in headshot sessions, here in Metro Detroit (and surrounding areas) that’s not always common knowledge. Whether you wear makeup every day or hardly ever, there are many reasons to invest in a makeup artist for your headshots. And yes — this applies to men, too!

The Benefits of Hiring a Makeup Artist

✨ Attention to Detail
A trained MUA will handle under-eye circles, blemishes, uneven skin tone, flyaways, and contouring — so you look polished without looking “overdone.”

✨ Shine Control
Makeup designed for camera keeps your skin from reflecting light in all the wrong ways. The wrong products can cause flashback, shine, or cakiness — problems a pro knows how to prevent.

✨ Fewer Retouches
Professional touch-ups throughout your session reduce the amount of editing needed later, which keeps your photos looking natural.

✨ Session Support
An MUA stays with us during your shoot for quick fixes and subtle adjustments, keeping every look fresh and consistent.

✨ Stress-Free Experience
Instead of worrying about how your makeup looks, you get to relax, feel pampered, and step in front of the camera with total confidence.

✨ Pro-Grade Products
The artists I work with use high-quality, photo-friendly products (no glitter, shimmer, or formulas that look heavy under lights). They also know my shooting style, my lighting, and exactly what will translate best on camera.

What If You Skip the Makeup Artist?

If hiring a makeup artist isn’t in your budget — or you’re confident in your own skills — that’s absolutely okay. I’ll ask you a few questions ahead of time to make sure you know what works best for headshots, and I’ll support you with guidance. I’ve had many actors and entrepreneurs do their own makeup beautifully.

That said, here are some things to keep in mind if you plan to do it yourself:

  • Less is more. Evening glam doesn’t translate to headshots. Keep it clean and natural. Local agents require natural as possible!

  • Consistency matters. Your headshots should look like you and match your brand, your reel, and your audition submissions.

  • Subtle changes go a long way. A different lip color or slight hair adjustment can shift a look without feeling drastic.

  • Look your range. Casting directors and agents want to see authenticity, not a version of you with every smile line erased.

  • Do a trial run. Practice in natural light (by a large window) so you know how your look will photograph.

  • Men, don’t forget grooming. Bring shaving tools, beard trimmers, and hair products to freshen up between looks.

  • Know when to bend the rules. If your brand calls for a bold lip, cat-eye liner, or period-specific glam, we’ll incorporate that — as long as it’s intentional and aligned with your look.

Bottom Line

Hiring a makeup artist isn’t about changing the way you look — it’s about enhancing what makes you unique, creating consistency across your looks, and making sure your investment in headshots truly pays off.

Whether you choose to bring in a pro or go solo, my goal is the same: to make sure you feel 100% confident, comfortable, and camera-ready.

✨Pro tip: If you want the easiest, most stress-free headshot experience, book one of my trusted MUAs when you schedule your session. It’s an investment that shows in every final image.
